It was early yet; the day had barely begun and the sky had only just begun to take on the orange and golden hues of morning. The blue, blue sky was lightening bit by bit as the stars winked out one by one. Dew sparkled upon the thick, still grass and laid it low beneath the heavy, wet weight. The burgeoning dawn was full of promise for the day ahead, hinting at the beauty that was to come.
There were few trees to be seen among the high grasses of the field; some where placed large distances apart while a sparse few seemed to huddle together, their branches oftentimes swaying together when a stiff enough breeze would pass. Beneath one of these huddled arc of trees, Mississippi Rain -Missi, or Rain as she sometimes allowed herself to be called- rested. Long, lanky legs were curved beneath her slight weight and her head tucked in, as though she were trying to make herself disappear among the grass and trees.
Dark eyes blinked open to take in the peaceful scene of the field around her as she rose slowly to her hooves. Gangly and still not quite grown into the full grace and beauty of a mature mare's form, she tilted slightly and had to take an extra step to reclaim her balance after so long of a siesta in the shade.
'Time to greet the day, I suppose..' she thought with a sigh, abandoning her shady retreat for the greener, juicier bits of grass basking in the early morning light. The pale tresses of her tail swished at her flanks as she stood, lowering her muzzle to the ground and nipping a great hank of the juicy, green stalks from the ground and chewing.
It was satisfying enough, that was true. The sweet grass sated her hunger just fine...But somehow being all on her own made everything seem tinged with gray..

It didn't seem like a bad day. The sun was out and no hint of storm clouds were in sight. A gentle breeze carressed his sides, making him shiver slightly because his coat was still wet. The young stallion shook his head, shaking droplets of water out of his mane and coat from his run through the small stream in The Wandering Fields. It had been the perfect day to come to the fields and just have a look around, perhaps even round up a new member to his herd or something like that. He had nothing better to do after all.
Trotting quietly, Thunder moved through the fields, no destination really in mind, just allowing himself to go wherever his hooves braught him. But only after a few minutes there, the scent of another horse quickly came to him. The scent was sweet, and feminine. A female most definetly. Thunder smiled and stopped for a moment, breathing in to decide which direction the mare was in. He found out quickly that the mare was only a few yards to his left.
That made things relatively easy. He turned and began to follow the scent. He was no blood-hound of course, but he had been lucky to be downwind of the mare, and her scent had carroed to him easily. So it was no trouble following the scent back from where it originated.
He found the mare quickly enough, grazing. His smirked but quickly switched his facial features to one more welcoming. He winnied a hello, but didn't move any closer to her so as not to frighten her off.

It was not uncommon for herds to pass through, rogues and lone mares to stay long enough to connect with one or another, and so Missi really didn't think it was important to keep a lookout for anyone else. It was very rare that anyone bothered to interrupt her solitude; she was not the most beautiful or graceful of mares and that, she supposed, made her less desirable in the eyes of some. Or perhaps it was simply the intervention of fate that kept her solitary until now; she would never know despite the often ceaseless pondering on the subject.
The scent of the stallion did not go unnoticed. However, she chose to ignore him and leave him to his own wanderings, never for a second thinking that it was her he would be approaching. Needless to say, she was startled to hear his approach so close to herself and to smell his scent growing nearer. But along with her surprise was a burgeoning hope: maybe she would finally end the depressing solitude. As timid as she could often be, she had never once tried to acknowledge or speak to anyone else who passed through but had, instead, shied from the presences of those who passed through.
There was no time for that, however, and instead she could only lift her muzzle from the succulent grasses, her dark gaze zeroing in on the stallion before her. Instant shyness assailed her as it usually did, but she found herself softly nickering a greeting in response as she watched the stallion.
((Blah..Sorry for the crap post xD))

Thunder watched as the mare slowly lifted her head and looked at him. She seemed shy and for a moment he thought she was going to say nothing, but then she nickered a quiet greeting. He nodded his head slowly, his ears perking forward as he studied her. The mare was nothing special, no beauty at the very least. He smiled all the same though.
Takeing a slow step forward, he began to near her, his gaze on her, intently. He didn't want to frighten her off. Perhaps it was her shyness? It seemed to trigger something protective in him. All thoughst of doing something bad had flown out the window. He felt a bit strange. He never felt that way about anyone, or anything. He stopped only a few yards away from the mare. "I'm Thunder," he said, introducing himself.

Had Missi even begun to guess at Thunder's first intentions upon approaching her, she probably would have run as far and fast as she could- not that it would have helped her to escape at all. But she certainly would have tried. Due to her nature, it took very little to frighten her and if she had even the slightest inkling that he had meant to do something bad to her she would not have stuck around to even utter a greeting.
But since she didn't know, she instead watched him quietly and smiled shyly as he approached. Her gaze stayed on him, though her head lowered just a fraction until she was looking up at him through her lashes as she scuffed a bit at the grass beneath her with a hoof.
Totally unaware of Thunder's sudden protective feelings or just how out of character they were, she took a soft, steadying breath before responding. "I'm Missi. It's..nice to meet you."

"Thats a nice name," Thunder said. Wow! Where had that come from! Had he ever said that to someone before? Hell no! What was wrong with him! He shook his head, trying to clear his thoughts. He was feeling pretty confused at the moment. Where had this feeling come from!? Why did he feel as if he wanted to protect the mare?
Thunder began to wonder if he had hit his head on a rock, or if that one time Midnight had kicked him he had suffered brain damage. No, that couldn't be right. If he had suffered brain dammage, then it wouldn't come now, it would have come years ago. So then, it had to be the mare, Missi.
Thunder looked at the young mare curiously. He only vaguely noticed when a bird in the tree a few yards away took flight with a flutter of feathers and a rustle of leaves. He thought for a moment then asked, "Are you part of a herd?" If she wasn't, then perhaps he could ask her to join his herd.
Usually he didn't do that; asking a mare if she wanted to join his herd. Usually he forcebred a mare first, and then gave her no choice but to join his herd. Why he didn't want to do that to this mare was still beyond him. He had decided that it was because of the mare and not because he had gone soft. He absolutely refused to even thing that he had gone soft. That would be insane!

"Thank you.." Missi responded softly, ducking her head a bit further in an obvious gesture of shy embarassment and flattery. She obviously wasn't used to compliments but she certainly did enjoy them, especially when coming from a handsome stallion. Even though that only made her shyness worse. It was a silly reaction and made her just want to kick herself, but she couldn't stop herself from reacting that way..and anyway, it was too late now.
She flicked her ears back toward the sound of the bird as it took flight, though her gaze stayed riveted on Thunder. He seemed kind enough, gentle even, and she had no clue that his behavior was unique to this one meeting. She almost couldn't believe her ears when he questioned her about whether or not she ran with a herd; why would a stallion like him be interested in a gangly, skittish, and certainly klutzy mare like her-even just as a herd mare?
Regardless of her less-than-flattering internal thought progress, she managed to respond to him once more without letting onto her surprise. In fact, she seemed to be loosening up a slight bit though her voice was as soft as ever. "O-oh, no...I don't.." A soft shake of her head sent the tresses of her forelock tumbling over half of her face, a quick breath blowing them back into place.
"I don't think I'm exactly what most stallions are looking for...I'm kind of awkward, you know.."she admitted softly with a self-conscious giggle.

Thunder visibly seemed to brighten. He grinned at her, but then quickly frowned when she said that most stallions weren't looking for mares like her because she was akward. His frown only lasted a moment though. He wasn't quiet sure how to reply to her comment. He couldn't deny that what she said was true. Usually he didn't care for mares like her, but there was something about Missi that he liked.
"Well, if you would like. You can join my herd. I'm lead stallion of The Plains," he said, his head lifting slightly with pride. Indeed, he was proud of his position, and he boasted about it often. And then he addressed her comment. "Well most stallions are stupid. They look at a mare and judge her by her appearence. It's not your fault most stallions are idiots," he said.
Who am I to talk! I'm exactly like that! he thought. He had to suppress a laugh at that. To think that he, of all stallions, he would be the one to say that. He shook his head and did chuckle softly, his eyes bright with humor. This was very unlike him. The last time he had laughed was when he had been a little foal. His smile widened slightly. He looked expectantly at Missi, hoping she would take up his offer.

Missi couldn't help but to smile back softly when he grinned at her, surprised but happy that he seemed pleased by her answer. Though the frown that followed perplexed her and she was instantly afraid that she had said something wrong, though she couldn't think what it would have been. She hadn't lied...she certainly was awkward, and timid, and even though she would fill out more and probably grow into her frame a bit, she knew she was pretty much the 'ugly duckling' of mares at the moment.
"Really?"Her eyes popped wide in response to his offer. Sure, she was impressed by his rank but she had already assumed that he was the leader of a herd in the area. He just seemed the type that others would follow and listen to. His response to her earlier comment would have made her blush were she able to; instead a shy smile curved her lips as she looked up at him.
"Thank you...That's very sweet of you to say."she told him sincerely, flattered. It had never occurred to her to think of it that way but she much preferred to her previous viewpoint. "I would be honored to join your herd, Thunder."she added, nearly tripping over the words in her hurry to get them out as though she were afraid if she took to long to answer he would change his mind.

Thunder smiled as he saw her surprise. He was still a bit confused with his feelings, but otherwise, he felt surprisingly happy. From watching her, he could tell that flattery was not something she heard a lot. Perhaps he could change that? He shrugged away his confusion and decided that he was just going to go with his instincts and see how everything turned out.
"Glad to hear it," he said, meaning it. "Would you like to come with me back to my herd? I can show you around a bit. Unless of course you already know your way around The Plains," he added. His head turned to the side and he glanced up at the light blue sky.
It was still early morning. The air smelled fresh and pure, and there was no hint of a cloud in the sky. The sunshine felt rather nice as it warmed Thunder's back. It was pleasant, and not too hot. It was Spring, and the passed Winter felt as if it had been nothing but a dream.
Thunder grinned at Missi, "I could show you something that you would really like. A place in The Plains that I haven't showed anyone else," he coxed.

Though she couldn't have said why, the more time she spent with Thunder the more relaxed she seemed to get. Oh, she was still quiet and a bit hesitant, but she wasn't so on-edge as she had been just moments ago. Nor was she constantly staring down at her own hooves and the grass in fear of meeting the stallion's eyes. But she liked it.
"I would love to..I've never been to The Plains before.."she said, smiling softly. "A tour would be nice."She was interested in seeing what would be her home, but more than that she wanted to spend more time with Thunder before she had to meet anyone else- or share his attention with others. She didn't know where that thought had come from or why- she certainly didn't think of him as anyone she could claim or cling to- but she couldn't deny that she liked the comfortable atmosphere of the moment.
The spring air felt glorious as it danced through her short pelt, bringing with it the scents of flowers and dew and other things that signified spring. All in all, it was a beautiful morning for exploration."Really? I'd like that." she smiled and nodded in response to Thunder's coaxing, more than eager to see what it was that he wanted to show her.

Thunder smiled when she agreed. "Ok, lets go then!" he said. He grinned and took a few steps back. His tail swished up, flicking at another fly that had landed on his back. Stupid flys. Why did they have to like horses? They were really usless creatures in Thunder's opinion. Their only use was to annoy every horse. And they did that it would seem.
With a small snort, Thunder lifted his head, his ears automatically perching forward. He froze, completetly still. Had that just been wolf he had smelled? Midnight had told him that there had been some wolves in her territory. But then he shrugged it off, it was probably just my imagination, he thought. But just to be sure, he looked at Missi to see if she had noticed anything.

Missi took a few quick steps forward to come up beside Thunder, flicking her tail lazily. A muscle in her flanks twitched as as a fly landed upon her, annoying her, and she snorted out a breath as another fluttered nearby. The flies were definitely annoying; they were the only bad byproduct of such a great day.
Watching him, she tilted her head as she noticed his sudden odd reaction."Thunder? What is it? Is something the matter?"she asked softly, concerned. She didn't hear anything out of the ordinary and she hadn't caught the scent of wolf, not that Missi would really recognize it that quickly if she had. Having no knowledge of wolves being in the area, it didn't even occurr to her to think of it.

Thunder shook his head. "Must have just been my imagination," he said with a shrug, "But I thought I smelled wolf there for a second." He inhaled again and then snorted. "I don't smell it anymore though."
A breeze caused his mane to be whipped around. he snorted again and then shrugged. "Oh well, lets go then," he said. He turned and began to slowly trott back the way he had come. All the same, he kept his senses up. It was possible that there were wolves here but that they were downwind of him. His eyes glanced around warily but then he looked behind him to check that Missi was following him.

"Oh, I see."Missi nodded and smiled, relieved. She had been worried that something was seriously wrong, though she hadn't been able to think of what it could be."Wolves, here? We should probably hurry away from here then..In case they really are somewhere nearby.."she said softly, sounding unsure and hesitant to suggest it, though since they were leaving anyway she figured it wouldn't hurt anything.
She turned her head up into the wind, letting it blow through her mane and giving a small sigh of pleasure. Deciding not to worry too much about it, she trotted after Thunder, keeping within a few steps of him so that she wouldn't get left behind or lost. [/size]
