For decades horses have roamed this land without being bothered by humans. The horses have called this land Freiheit (pronounced: Fri-Height), which means “freedom” in German, ever since they have called this place home. It’s a rather fitting name, as the land of Freiheit is the only place where the horses have lived without contact to the two-legged race. The horses here are wild and completely untouched by humans…or so they thought.
There are stories that have been passed down from generation to generation, that hold a powerful truth in them, though most horses don’t believe them anymore. They say that a long time ago, humans lived in this land they call Freiheit. These humans brought thousands of horses with them on ships from across the sea. But when they landed, something went oddly wrong. The humans all fell ill of some kind of decease. Some lived longer and some died only after being on Freiheit for a couple of days. The horses were all set free at the death of the humans.
At first, the horses had no idea what to do with themselves. All their lives they had been bred to behave. But as time passed, their tameness vanished and they became wild. From generation to generation their tameness grew weaker and weaker. The horses became free, and lived up to the name of their new home.
Some of the older horses fear that the humans will come again. It happened once before, but the same illness took them. It seems to be something in the air that poisons the land. Animals are completely unaffected however. Freiheit has become a sanctuary for horses from the cruelty of humans. Not that they know this. It was perhaps two centuries ago that the last human set foot on Freiheit.
This land is just too perfect. There has to be something here that isn’t good. Right? But the suspicion has ebbed away along with their domestic side. The predators stalk the land of Freiheit, but they have never been of real consequence. The mountain cats, leopards, wolves, and many other predators live here, along with the mice, voles, birds, and so much more. It would be considered a state of nature from a human’s point of view. But humans don’t exist here.
None of the horses ever looked for the bodies of their owners after they died all those decades ago. They simply left them down at their abandoned town near the beach. If they had looked, they would have been shocked to see……that there was nothing. The bodies, had vanished.
But none of the horses ever bothered to look. They didn’t care what became of their old masters. But it could make some wonder. What happened to the bodies? If only the horses knew. Perhaps then they wouldn't have become so thingyy about their freedom. But no one shall ever know, until perhaps, it is too late....
